Bernstein was born Feb. 28, 1931, in Brooklyn, the son of the late Harold and Stella (Slovick) Bernstein.
He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of New Mexico, where he received his bachelors degree; he earned his Masters of Science in taxation at New York University.
Bernstein married Jewel Berliner in 1952 and moved to Ossining. He formed the firm Mark Rich Company in Ossining, specializing in accounting. In 1971, he started A&J Tax Prep, Inc., which is still operating today, also specializing in accounting and taxation.
He was a past president of the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Rotary Club in Ossining. He also was a former treasurer at the Congregation Sons of Israel in Briarcliff Manor and a longtime adjunct professor at Westchester Community College. Bernstein was a history buff who also enjoyed playing bridge and summertime grilling with his family.
He is survived by his children Sydna Bernstein Wenick and her husband Gary and Mark and his life partner Monica De Sousa; five grandchildren, Libbie, Eliana and Shira Wenick and Lee and Sarah Bernstein; and aunt, Laura Wedeck and her family.
He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Jewel.
