Ossining Excited About Planned Mixed-Use Project

OSSINING, N.Y. - A mixed-use development that would bring 168 market rate and affordable units and office space in Ossining is moving forward, much to the delight of village officials.

"I think everyone is very favorable of this project," said Village Planner Valerie Monastra. "It will be provide parkland, open space, historic preservation, and it will also bring new people to Ossining."

The project, next to Mariandale, is being developed by AvalonBay Communities, which owns or holds interest in hundreds of apartment communities with more than 50,000 housing units throughout the country.

Currently awaiting approval from some Ossining boards, AvalonBay is proposing constructing four buildings, three to four-stories high, that will house one, two and three-bedroom units. Of those units, 10 percent will be marketed as affordable housing.

The plan also includes 14,400 square feet of office space, but that's contingent on finding a tenant, according to Monastra. The development would have about 300 parking spaces.

Meanwhile, eight acres will be donated to Ossining for parkland to connect to the Edward M. Wheeler Crawbuckie Nature Preserve and Westchester County's 51-mile RiverWalk. There will also be linear connections to trails and the Croton Aqueduct, and an historic house on the site will be preserved.

Monastra said she anticipated the final environmental impact statement for the project to be completed in a month or so.
