OSSINING, N.Y. -- Ossining Boat & Canoe Club (OBCC) staged a rally recently to raise awareness of the Town Board's plan to replace the historic building on the Hudson River at Engel Park that is their headquarters, a move most members oppose.
"Everyone really worked together last night. We got our desire for OBCC’s preservation across loud and clear to both the Town Board, and to Ossining in general. Members were great in vocalizing our message," said Pete Eagleton, OBCC member and preservation advocate, in a statement.
Volunteers made signs for the gathering outside the Ossining Public Library to reflect their love for Ossining and for the historic building. One series of signs featured a painting that Eagleton's father had done, featuring a Hudson River sunset painted from the back porch.
The current status of the town-owned building is that the town has given some of OBCC’s qualified members the opportunities to gain periodic access to it in order to start making some of the repairs needed to bring it up to code. However, the town remains committed to its feasibility study considering demolition.
All of the repairs and updates will be paid for by the club, which is working collaboratively with the board and will continue to meet with them in the weeks to come.
