To the Editor:

I wait with baited breath to hear what the Town of Ossining will decide regarding the findings of the Ossining Committee for Fair Taxation. As a single family homeowner, I have seen my taxes double since 2007 the brunt of which came with the 2016 reassessment. I agree with the Committee that it seems hardly fair the condominium owners would pay 40-60% of the assessment rate. I thank the individuals spearheading this campaign.

BUT. I would like to see these gentlemen go a bit further to fight for fairness for the 6,800 single- family homeowners in Ossining. Let's take a closer look at how multi-family homes are taxed. Many homeowners in Ossining may not be aware that structures with 3+ units are taxed AT THE SAME RATE as a single family home. So take some of the multi-families on Hamilton Avenue, for example. Some of these large homes have 6 or more units. That's 6x as much garbage service, 6x the number of cars using the roads, perhaps 3-4x the number of children in schools (taking into account that some of those living in these apartments are likely childless). And if you want to make yourself really furious, check the Tyler MMRC website to see the assessed value of some of these multi-family homes.

Most single family homeowners in Ossining agree that our taxes are too damn high. Now Is the time to take a closer look at ALL the property types and level the field.

Thank you,

Erika Boetsch
