SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. A mysterious oil leak is once again popping up in the Hudson River near the Castle Oil site and Horan's Landing Park in Sleepy Hollow, and officials say the cause of the leak has yet to be determined.
The leak was first noticed two years ago. An investigation followed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Westchester County Department of Health. That investigation proved inconclusive.
"It's been too long to see this type of leak so we need to get an answer from the DEC," Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio said at Tuesday's Board of Trustees meeting.
The Friends of Horan's Landing Park have also been in touch with Riverkeeper, Giaccio said.
Village officials said they were not implying the Castle Oil site was the cause of the leak they were only referencing it in terms of the leak's location along the shore.
"Two years ago it came up, and we notified" the Department of Environmental Conservation, Mayor Ken Wray said. "They haven't been able to identify the source of the leak."
A request for more information about the leak from the DEC had not been answered.
Trustee Susan MacFarlane, an Ichabod's Landing resident, said she had noticed a small oil sheen appearing on the river, but it wasn't too alarming. She went kayaking at Horan's Landing a few weekends ago.
"It appears to be a very slow leak, but steady, so it's not like the area of Horan's Landing is being flooded with oil right now," she said. "It is a gradual drip coming out through the surface that you can see the sheen. It's definitely something we want to take care of, if we can."
