Ex-Hudson Valley Renegades Player Sentenced For Trying To Smuggle Heroin

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Former minor league baseball player Leandro Caminero, who played for the Hudson Valley Renegades in Fishkill's Dutchess Stadium, has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison after pleading guilty to importation of heroin and possession of heroin with intent to distribute, according to multiple reports.

The outfielder was apprehended at Kennedy Airport for attempting to bring 11 pellets he had swallowed into the United States after stepping off a June JetBlue flight, according to the New York Post.

Caminero, who is from the Dominican Republic, has been in custody for seven months, the New York Post reports.

Caminero last played for the Renegades, a Tampa Bay Devil Rays affiliate, in 2012.
