OSSINING, N.Y. – Ossining’s Luis P. Xavier, a Con Edison gas mechanic, has won what Con Edison considers to be its highest honor, the “Living Our Values” award.

The 42-year Con Edison veteran was chosen for “exemplifying Con Edison’s values of service, teamwork, excellence and community service,” said Allan Drury, Con Edison’s media relations official. Xavier works on a team that “monitors the infiltration of water into Con Edison’s underground gas distribution system” and helps prevent water from disrupting the mains and the flow of gas to customers, Drury said. Xavier helped develop a system that allows him to “anticipate spots where water is most likely to enter the system at a rate that can cause customer outages,” Drury said.

“Luis’s dedication to our customers and his immense knowledge of our gas system make him an invaluable member our team,” David R. Ferri, Con Edison manager of Gas Operations in Westchester, said in a news release. “He looks for opportunities to offer advice and guidance to his colleagues and he’s just as generous with his time outside of work in contributing to civic causes in his community.”

Xavier joined Con Edison in May of 1971. In his more than 40 years with the company, Xavier has “repeatedly shown his willingness to do whatever he can to help customers in the aftermath of major storms,” Drury said. Xavier also has volunteered to help Electric Operations by picking up transformers that were damaged and needed to be replaced.

“I love the work I do. I love working with my hands,” said Xavier in the release. “And, of course, the customer service is very satisfying. We know people count on us and we enjoy serving them.”

Xavier also helped found the Portuguese Club of Ossining, which teaches children from Portugal to maintain their Portuguese language skills in case they return to their native country. He has also coached soccer in his community through the American Youth Soccer Organization, according to the release.
