Ossining Cheever Celebration Concludes Sunday

OSSINING, N.Y. – The impact of his writing can be seen in TV shows like "Mad Men" or in one of several movies based on his books, and the Ossining Public Library wants to help make sure that local author John Cheever’s impact continues locally.

The Ossining Public Library named its reading room after Ossining author John Cheever, and to honor the late author’s 100th birthday, the library hosted dozens of events in Cheever’s name over the past four months with its John Cheever Centennial programs. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, the library will hold one final event, a closing reception honoring Cheever’s life and books.

“We’ve been happy to put this on to celebrate one of our local authors, but I hope more people keep reading his books,” said library Program Coordinator Jim Trapasso. “I think it’s important to acknowledge our local writers, and we’re paying tribute to our most famous Ossining author. It’s been a great celebration, and it’s been very well-received. I hope a lot of people will join us in celebrating on Sunday.”

The months-long celebrations culminated on Cheever’s birthday, May 27. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author died in June 1982. The Ossining Public Library holds a collection of nearly every published work from John Cheever, including award-winning books like “The Swimmer” and “The Enormous Radio.” For more information about the Cheever collection or the Centennial Celebration, call the library at (914) 941-2416.
