Letter: Vote Yes on Ossining School Bond

As the parent of two young children, including one already in the Ossining schools, I’m very concerned with the physical state of our buildings. Though I value the quality of their teachers and instruction, the safety of my children is of utmost concern to me. With that in mind it’s greatly upsetting to learn of the many issues our aging buildings face such as a leaky roof at AMD that has caused a significant crack to the wall where outdoor recess is held and is a disaster waiting to happen. In addition to this serious issue, our buildings do not meet a number of safety codes and have a slew of other problems that need addressing. These include outdated boilers that waste unnecessary dollars; much needed repairs at the High School’s 80 year old auditorium; and serious capacity issues for a student population that has nearly doubled since the early 1990’s.

The latest bond proposal aims to address these issues and more including updating much of AMD, which has barely been touched since opening in the early 1960’s. That includes Science Labs that pre-date man landing on the moon!

Knowing the vast amount of work that needs to be done, I was already prepared to vote yes, but after learning more about the bond including how it will not raise taxes I will do so enthusiastically and urge other residents to do the same.
