Ossining's SummerFest Kicks Off Friday

OSSINING, N.Y. – Omar Herrera is hoping the only electricity felt during Ossining’s SummerFest comes from the celebration and energy of the crowd, not the skies above.

And with storms in the forecast for the third annual music and arts festival on Friday, Herrera is not taking any chances in jinxing what he calls “the day Ossining comes together.”

“Don’t say the 'R' word,” said Herrera, director for the Ossining Chamber of Commerce. “Last year it was literally the hottest day in the year and that was tough but I think it cooled down and people had an amazing time. I think this event is going to be huge this year.”

SummerFest kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday in Ossining’s Market Square. The event is a celebration of arts and music put together by the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce, Events by Omar and dozens of local sponsors. This year’s festival is set to feature non-stop live entertainment and music on two stages featuring local bands Left In The Attic, Thrown Together and Deadweight Burden. The festival also includes new family activities like the “Black-Top of Expression,” a sectioned off part of the Market Square parking lot to allow children and artists of all ages to express themselves downtown.

Nearly 2,000 people came out last year, Herrera said, but with nearly double the stages, food vendors and musical acts, Herrera is hoping for a much bigger crowd.

“We’ve added something for everyone and we really wanted this to be something the entire community could celebrate and it’s free,” Herrera said. “How many places can you go and do something and have a great time and see local bands and it’s free? That’s why this is so special for us.”

Local area shops and restaurants are also getting in on the festivities with Shop Local deals and promotions available all day Friday.

“The SummerFest shows how our community can come together and do anything,” Herrera said. “This started as an opportunity for everyone to express themselves and have fun but it’s turning into so much more.”

Ossining’s DJ Johnny G said SummerFest offers up a unique atmosphere and excitement not seen anywhere else.

“We have so many good bands playing and all of these other things going on. It’s going to be incredible,” he said. “It’s something downtown Ossining needs. In the summer, people are always looking for something to do. This is going to be great and it’s free. You can’t get anything better than that.”
