OSSINING, N.Y. -- The Maryknoll Mission Institute is hosting a week-long program "Women Mystics: Drinking from the Well of Women's Spiritual Tradition" in June in Ossining.

Women whose teachings will be explored during the program include Gertrude the Great of Helfta, Julian of Norwich, Hadewijch of Brabant, and Dorothee Soelle, according to a press release. The program is scheduled for June 1 to 6 at Maryknoll Sisters Center at 10 Pinesbridge Road in Ossining.

“Women’s struggle to enjoy full voice and respect within the churches continues despite the remarkable contributions of women’s scholarship and contemplative gifts,” the Institute’s brochure on its 2014 programs stated, according to the release. “In our time together, we will drink deeply from the well of the women’s mystical tradition, discovering their strategies for security the authority to teach and minister to the people of God. We will explore their historical contexts, their key teachings, and experiment with some of their mystical practices.”

Sister Janet K. Ruffing, professor of the Practice of Spirituality and Ministerial Leadership at Yale Divinity School in New Haven, will serve as resource person for the program, according to the release.

Ruffing, a member of the Sisters of Mercy, is professor emerita of spirituality and spiritual direction at Fordham University and the author of more than 90 articles and five books.
