The inaugural Holiday Lighting of the 1883 Lighthouse at Sleepy Hollow is scheduled for Dec. 3, according to event organizers.

In the spirit of the season, all who attend are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation to Open Door Family Medical Centers and the RSHM Life Center of Sleepy Hollow, according to organizers.

The free event at the festively decorated lighthouse is to begin at 3:30 p.m. with the lighting ceremony starting at 4 p.m., organizers said.

In addition to the decorations, the Heartfelt Quartet is to perform holiday carols, according to organizers, who said that free hot cider and donuts will be available and that Santa Claus is expected to make an appearance.

One of the goals of the event is to promote interest and appreciation for the historic lighthouse, which has held a number of different names since its original construction in 1883, including the Tarrytown Lighthouse, the Kingsland Point Lighthouse and the 1883 Lighthouse at Sleepy Hollow.

Though the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1961, the village of Sleepy Hollow and the Westchester County Department of Parks in 2015 commissioned and installed a working replica of the lens and rotating light that once operated at the top of the lighthouse, according to organizers.

Currently, the U.S. Coast Guard recognizes the lighthouse as a functioning Private Aid to Navigation, organizers said.

On the day of the event, the lighthouse will be accessible through Edge-On-Hudson (199 Beekman Ave.), a mixed-use community currently under development adjacent to the lighthouse, according to organizers, who said that Edge-On-Hudson is providing parking and sponsorship for the lighting ceremony.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 4, according to organizers. Visit the Edge-On-Hudson online for more information about weather delays and updates.
