The Nassau County Police Department issued an alert this week warning of email scams, noting that “legitimate agencies never ask for money via wire transfer or gift cards.”
Police noted that scammers can easily create an unauthorized email simply by using the same logo and design as a legitimate company to make it appear official. Residents have been warned not to send anything to companies that do not respond back to attempts to receive more information.
According to police, one should not click any pop-up windows or links or open any attachments asking to “validate,” or “confirm” requests for personal information. Those being targeted can also do an Internet search for the email address of the alleged company to see if others have dealt with them.
“Internet search the exact wording of the email, someone may have already received this scam,” police said. “Reach out to alleged company’s corporate headquarters to confirm the legitimacy of the email.”
To spot an email, the department offered several tips to detect it. It might be a scam if:
- The email contains a generic rather than personal greeting;
- The organization or business name is unclear or not listed;
- Poor quality grammar, spelling and presentation;
- The email requests large amounts of money or personal information;
- Unexpected pop-ups on an electronic device requesting unknown software to run.
