Born in Manhattan, O'Connell graduated from Hunter College with three master's degrees. She worked until her retirement as a reading specialist for the New York City and North Rockland junior high schools.
She was a member of the Village of Piermont Planning Board, president of the DeVries Condominium Board, member of the St. John the Baptist Parish Council, founding member of the Piermont Community Garden and member of the Friends of Piermont Library.
"She enjoyed travelling, spending time with family and friends, and had a thirst for learning," information from the funeral home noted. "At age 82, she was enrolled in college classes. She was an inspiration to many and will be greatly missed."
O'Connell is survived by her children, Daniel, Sean and Marianne Bruck, and her grandchildren, Katherine, Michael, Margaret, Seamus and Maeve. She was predeceased by her husband of over 30 years, Daniel O'Connell.
A funeral mass was held at St. John the Baptist Church, in Piermont, with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Hawthorne. The Moritz Funeral Home, in Tappan, assisted with arrangements.
