Olena Kalichenko, 32, was sentenced in federal court in Central Islip to 20 years in prison following her 2016 guilty plea to conspiracy to sexually exploit a child, sexual exploitation of a child, production of child pornography for importation into the United States, and transportation of child pornography.

U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said that between April 2012 and November 2012, Kalichenko produced 46 custom-made videos of child pornography that were scripted by Smithtown resident Joseph Valerio, depicting a 2-year-old girl in Ukraine. In exchange for thousands of dollars, Kalichenko emailed the videos to Valerio.

In January 2014, FBI agents and Suffolk County Police officers searched Valerio’s Smithtown home, where they found hidden cameras, costumes, a wooden stage, computers, and other electronic devices. Further investigation found that Valerio had produced child porn in his basement with a 6-year-old girl.

Kalichenko was arrested in July 2014 when she traveled to the United States. She reportedly alleged that she was lured by Valerio, who was a former boyfriend.

“The defendant’s lengthy prison sentence should serve as a warning to anyone who victimizes children by producing and trafficking child pornography, on the internet or otherwise: You will be identified, apprehended, prosecuted and punished,” Donoghue said.

Valerio, 52, was convicted by a federal jury in November 2014 of conspiracy to sexually exploit a child, sexually exploiting a child, and transporting, receiving and possessing child pornography.  He was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
