BLAUVELT, N.Y. – Authorities dealt with an estimated 1,000-gallon discharge of raw sewage Thursday near Lake Tappan, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.
The discharge occurred when a manhole behind a Riverside Terrace home became clogged and overflowed about 1 a.m. Thursday, DEC officials said in a warning issued later in the day.
The overflow was not reported until about 10:20 a.m. Officials estimate that about 100 gallons per hour of untreated sewage spilled from the manhole for about 10 ½ hours, the DEC said.
Though authorities handled the sewage spill, it was not known Thursday night if the incident would have an impact on any part of the surrounding area.
