The free admission offer includes entry to one of four 40-minute IMAX movies. Admission is normally $22.95 for adults, $20.95 for youth and seniors and $15.95 for children age 3 to 12.

Also Saturday, Norwalk residents get a 10 percent discount at the Aquarium Gift Shop. Proof of residency is required.

Santa Claus dons scuba gear for Shark-Diving Santa shows at 12:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. The shows include Santa and volunteer divers in the Ocean Beyond the Sound exhibit.

The Maritime Aquarium offers visitors a glimpse at more than 2,700 marine animals, including sand tiger sharks, harbor seals, river otters, sea turtles and jellyfish that are all native to Long Island Sound and surrounding areas. The Shark-Diving Santa shows are open most Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout this month.

Salute Norwalk Day also gives city residents a free chance to admire two historic Works Progress Administration (WPA) murals painted by Alexander Rummler in 1937 and displayed in the Maritime Aquarium. The WPA was a federal program in the 1930s to help get Americans to work during the Great Depression.

The movies available on the six-story IMAX screen, which officials say is the largest in Connecticut, are “Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Secret Ocean,” “Born to Be Wild,” “National Parks Adventure” and “A Beautiful Planet.”

In addition to “Salute Norwalk Day," the Maritime Aquarium regularly offers dozens of educational programs and other marine science opportunities to Norwalk school students. The Aquarium and its 450,000 annual visitors contribute more than $20 million annually into Norwalk's economy, officials said.
