LI Man Nabbed In Massapequa Park In Connection With Fatal Overdose

A Long Island man charged in connection with a fatal overdose attempted to escape capture by ramming police vehicles and injuring an officer.

West Babylon resident Javonne Mimms, age 30, was arrested in Lindenhurst on Wednesday, May 18 in connection with the Sunday, April 10 fatal overdose in Merrick.

According to Nassau County detectives, during the investigation at the Best Western Hotel located at 5080 Sunrise Highway, in Massapequa Park, Mimms intentionally struck a Nassau County Police vehicle with a 2018 white BMW, causing a detective to suffer a back injury. 

He fled the scene after striking a second parked, unoccupied vehicle. A short time later, Mimms was arrested on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst, police said.

During his arrest, officers recovered a white substance believed to be crack cocaine, police said.

The detective who suffered a back injury was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Mimms was charged with:

  • Criminal possession of a controlled substance
  • Criminal sale of a controlled substance
  • Assault
  • Three counts of criminal mischief
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Two counts of leaving the scene of an incident

He will be arraigned on Thursday, May 19, at First District Court, in Hempstead.

Mimms was previously arrested on Thursday, May 12, for criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal sale of a controlled substance.

He was released without bail.
