Richard J. May, 82, Of Hyde Park

HYDE PARK, N.Y. – Richard J. May, a longtime resident of Hyde Park, died Tuesday, July 26. He was 82.

Born Nov. 17, 1933, in Corona (Queens), N.Y., he was the son of the late Richard and Josephine Spinka May.

For 30 years, he worked in the insurance industry as a commercial safety and liability inspector. He was employed by the CNA Insurance Co. (which is based in Chicago), and he also did freelance work for other insurance companies.

He served in the U.S. Navy from September 1952 to August 1956. He was awarded the National Defense Service Ribbon. As a veteran, he was a member of numerous associations and organizations, including the Korean War Veterans Association, the USS Forrestal CVA/CV/AVT-49 Association, and the Rhinebeck American Legion Post. Richard enjoyed working around his home and on his property.

On April 28, 1962, Richard married Louise G. Muhlbach May in Bayside Queens.

He is survived by his wife; brothers-in-law, George Pecina and Edwin Peterson; one nephew, James Pecina; and five nieces, Janet Bagnell, Joanne Steinruck, Karen Livingston, Susan Flack, and Joyce Mehr.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise Pecina and Elsie Peterson.

Calling hours will be Monday, Aug. 1, from 10-11 a.m. at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kregg Gabor officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at Maple Grove Cemetery, Kew Gardens, Queens.
