Donald R. Mergenthaler, 66, Rhinebeck Resident

RHINEBECK, N.Y. — Rhinebeck native Donald R. Mergenthaler died Thursday, Dec. 17. He was 66.

A graduate of Red Hook High School, Mergenthaler served in the U.S. Army as an acting sergeant. 

He also worked for many years as a groundskeeper at the Hudson River Psychiatric Center in Poughkeepsie before retiring in 2004. 

After his retirement, he worked part time for Keil Equipment Co. 

On May 28, 1972, in Red Hook, he married his wife, Louise A. (Dykeman) Mergenthaler; she survives him at home. 

He is survived by his wife, Louise A. (Dykeman) Mergenthaler; his mother, Mabel Mergenthaler; a daughter, Dawn Mergenthaler and her partner Jeremy Marano; and a son, Eric Mergenthaler. Mergenthaler also his survived by his sisters, Sarah Wentzel Deborah Mergenthaler, Dorothy Funk; brothers, Robert Mergenthaler, Steven Mergenthaler, Fred Mergenthaler; grandchildren, Joshua Mergenthaler, Kaitlyn Marano, and Elijah Marano; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Frederick Mergenthaler.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook. 

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes. 

Memorial donations may be made in Mergenthaler's memory to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society, 125 Humane Society Road, Hudson, NY 12534.
