The two seminars in March are scheduled for the following days:

  • Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at St. Martin de Porres Parish’s Nativity Center (118 Cedar Valley Road in Poughkeepsie)
  • Monday, March 25 at 1 p.m. at Wells Manor Apartments (6 Wells Manor Lane in Rhinebeck)

While seniors are said to be the biggest targets of scams, the information presented at these seminars can benefit individuals of all ages. Once any type of compensation is given to the scammer, it’s often extremely difficult or even impossible to recover it.

These scams are executed in a wide variety of insidious ways. A newer scam involves victims receiving a pop-up on their computer or phone altering them to a virus. The scammer then offers to clean the hardware for a nominal fee before saying they were unable to fix the problem. After offering to refund the money, they request banking information and then withdraw money from the victim’s account.

Other scams often involve identity theft, “catfishing” schemes involving false identities and other schemes that are intended to play on the victim’s emotions.

“Scammers looking to separate victims from their hard-earned money are more prevalent and use more advanced methods than ever before,” said County Executive Molinaro. “Our Office for the Aging is diligent in its protection of our seniors, and its staff continually provides presentations to inform residents of the threat scammers pose. I urge all residents to consider attending this important discussion, as anyone of any age can benefit from the information that will be presented.”
