The suspect accused of opening fire on two sheriff's deputies at a home in the region has died.

The incident happened at around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 23 in Saratoga County, at the Fox Run apartment complex in Clifton Park, located on Foxwood Drive.

According to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were assisting the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in executing a federal search warrant at one of the units.

Deputies had announced themselves and entered the home when a 23-year-old man inside opened fire on them, Sheriff Michael Zurlo said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

“We encountered a dangerous subject this morning when we entered that residence," he said.

Two deputies were hit by the gunfire, including one who was struck in the thigh.

Deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect.

All three were taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment, where the suspect, identified as Anthony Zaremski, was later pronounced dead.

One deputy was still hospitalized Monday afternoon and was expected to undergo surgery. Zurlo called his prognosis "excellent."

The other deputy has since been released from the hospital.

Zurlo would not comment on the caliber of the weapons involved in the shooting or say how many shots were fired.

According to officials, Zaremski had a lengthy criminal history, including arrests for attempted murder, criminal possession of narcotics, and weapons possession.

At the time of the shooting, sheriff's officials and the DEA were serving multiple search warrants throughout the Capital Region as part of a six-month investigation into drug and weapons crime.

Prior to the incident, officers had seized hundreds of thousands of fentanyl and ecstasy pills, along with 50 handguns and rifles, in connection to the probe, officials said.

Zurlo said the shooting is under investigation.
