New York Archbishop Cardinal Timothy Dolan celebrated mass and blessed the new center during its grand opening ceremonies. The recently completed 38-bed center will enable patients who otherwise would have to leave the region for care to receive care closer to their families.

“For many of our patients, today is a joyous homecoming,” Cardinal Dolan said. “No longer will they have to be separated from the ones they love just to access the expert, compassionate care they deserve."

Michael Doyo, executive director of ArchCare at Ferncliff, said it was wonderful to have Cardinal Dolan bless the new center.

ArchCare, the healthcare system of the Archdiocese of New York, helps treat people with Huntington's disease, a fatal genetic disorder that progressively deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities.

Alan Pfeffer, whose daughter Charise has Huntington's, said Ferncliff has helped improve her quality of life.

"I know that she is safe from so many risks of harm," Pfeffer said. "We are so glad that ArchCare and Ferncliff took up the challenge of creating this unit and filling a void that was so very much needed.”
