These include the opening of a new exhibition on Pearl Harbor, "Day of Infamy: 24 Hours That Changed History," an exhibit in the vanden Heuvel Gallery through Dec. 31.
For America and the world, 1941 was a pivotal year. Bookended by Franklin D. Roosevelt's Four Freedoms speech in January and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941 became democracy's moment to stand against totalitarianism.
On June 30, 1941, President Roosevelt created a national treasure -- America's first presidential library -- and gave it to the people of the United States, to be run by the National Archives and Records Administration.
Making the papers of his presidency public documents in this way was an unprecedented act. Since that day, more than 13 million people have walked through the Library's front doors and enjoyed its research facilities, exhibits, education programs and public events.
The anniversary events include:
June 30:
- 11 a.m., 75th Anniversary Ceremony with remarks by Michael Beschloss
- Noon, Pearl Harbor Exhibition Opens
- 2 p.m., panel discussion on the library's history
- 3 p.m., book talk with William E. Leuchtenburg, "The American President: From Teddy Roosevelt to Bill Clinton"
- 7 p.m., Theatrical Performance: "In Their Own Words: The Roosevelts"
- 10 a.m., Family Fun Festival on the Lawn (Circus, WWII Music, Food Trucks)
- 4 p.m., Theatrical Performance: "In Their Own Words: The Roosevelts"
- 7 p.m. Theatrical Performance: "In Their Own Words: The Roosevelts"
