In Columbia County, North Chatham Fire Department Chief Brent Gawron died Saturday, May 13, at his home in the hamlet of Malden Bridge, according to a GoFundMe campaign created the following day.
“Brent passed away last night in a tragic accident at home,” reads the campaign. “This loss is unimaginable for us all but especially for his wife, Erinn and their two daughters, Lucy and Penelope.”
The campaign’s creators, Jason and Catherine Squires, did not elaborate on a cause of death.
“Brent was a kind, hardworking family man. He was a doting, loving husband and an amazing father to their two girls,” their tribute continues. “His dedication to his family was second to none.”
In addition to his duties at the Chatham Fire Department, Gawron also worked as a highway maintenance worker for the New York State Department of Transportation, according to his Facebook profile.
An online wedding announcement shows that he married his wife Erinn in Hannock, Massachusetts, in June 2022.
As news of his death spread, neighboring fire agencies have paid tribute to the young chief, including the Tri-Village Fire company in the hamlet of Old Chatham.
“Chief Gawron was a loving family (sic), loved his community and made many friends along the way in the fire service,” the agency said in a statement.
“Brent was one of those guys you would call and his answer would be, if you need help, let us know.’ Brent will be remembered for his service to community and always finding a way to make people smile.”
In another Facebook tribute, the Spencertown Fire Company remembered Gawron as a “true leader, friend, family man, father, and a great firefighter.”
Writing on GoFundMe, the Squires’ said the last thing they want Gawron’s wife to worry about is funeral expenses and the cost of taking time off of work to be with her daughters.
“We thank you in advance for any contribution you may be able to give to help Brent’s family through this unspeakable tragedy,” they wrote.
“Losing Brent will not be easy for anyone, but keeping each other close during this time may help to lessen the heartache.”
Funeral arrangements for Gawron had not been made public as of Monday, May 15.
The GoFundMe campaign had raised over $12,000 of its $50,000 goal by Monday afternoon. Those who wish to donate can do so here.
