SOMERS, N.Y. -- Once Ryan Osleeb made a call and was able to have someone cover his work shift, the recent North Salem athlete was on his way to the Iowa Style Wrestling School camp, featuring Binghamton University coach Pat Popolizio.
Osleeb, a four-time Section 1 champion and 2011 small-school 30-pound titlist, wanted to be there, especially after missing the New York Wrestling Camp at John Jay-Cross River High School last month.
I was at Harvard the same week helping out with a camp and wrestling in the afternoon, said Osleeb, as he prepared for lunch. I have fond memories of the John Jay camp because Joe (Mazzurco) and Troy (Nickerson) are such great technicians and it is very well-run.
Osleeb said this camp, which ran Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., appealed to him because of his affiliation with Iowa Style coach/owner John Degl and Popolizios presence.
I know Coach Popolizio because Ive gone to his camp for three years, said the Harvard-bound Osleeb, who trains at Iowa Style.
Osleeb was drilling with recent Beacon graduate Vin Grella, the 2011 large-school 152-pound third-place finisher and Binghamton-bound wrestler. In the afternoon, Osleeb has been drilling and wrestling live with the Binghamton wrestlers. Even though it has been scorching hot this week outside and inside the facility, Osleeb has been thriving on the work.
In the afternoon, Ive been doing a lot of chain wrestling with the college guys, Osleeb said. They know how to drill hard, and Ive been working on my hand fighting with them also. Working with them has further helped my training this summer.
Osleeb has not been disappointed with his week. This has been what I expected, said Osleeb, who finished with more than 100 varsity wins for North Salem. I came in and knew it was going to be tough, but I have worked really hard and it has helped me get better.
