North Salem Kids Have An Hour’s Fun With Numbers

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – It is not too late for children who like numbers and puzzles to spend a summertime hour having fun with Aysa Takken at the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library. Takken is a math wizard who says she “simply loves numbers,” and joyfully shares her passion with children by teaching them math-related games, challenging them with fascinating puzzles and helping them to develop new skills and understandings.

At last week’s session, children played Twenty Questions, centered on guessing geometric shapes, then did some construction work, building figures entirely out of triangles. A calculation contest was especially successful, Takken said.

“This group is friendly but competitive. Friendly-competitive.”

Another success was the math-based magic tricks.

“One child was so delighted, he rushed right away to try the trick on his mother,” Takken said.

“It’s wonderful fun for kids who like math and want to enjoy it over the summer.”

The final session of the three-part program, Math Games and Puzzles, is scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. It is geared toward children in grades three through five, but budding mathematicians of other ages might enjoy it as well.

There is no charge, but space is limited so please call the library to register. The number is 914-669-5161. The Ruth Keeler Memorial Library is at 276 Titicus Road, North Salem.
