North Salem Polls Open For 7 Green Party Voters

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – There is no primary election for major candidates in North Salem this year, since the party nominations are uncontested. Incumbent Republican state Sen. Greg Ball will run against Democrat Justin Wagner in the 40th Senate District.

However, the North Salem primary polls will be open Thursday to accommodate the town’s seven registered Green Party voters. The North Salem Fire House on Route 116 will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. No Green Party candidate is actively running for the state Senate, but registered party members are entitled to the opportunity to write in a name.

Ordinarily six people staff each of the polling stations, said Town Clerk Veronica Howley, and each of them is paid $225 to $250 per day.

“Add to that the cost of moving the voting machines here from Ardsley,” Howley said. “We have to hire a moving company. There are other costs as well. So it averages out to over $200 per write-in vote for seven people who may or may not show up.”
