Have you spotted a new marine vessel patrolling Lake Mahopac?

Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley Jr. announced his office has launched a 2012 Boston Whaler that can search in the dark and handle water emergencies. The newer, 21-foot vessel replaces an 18-foot Boston Whaler built in 1998.

In addition to a standard marine-patrol vessel package, the new watercraft comes equipped with radar and a forward-looking infrared camera.

In a news release, Langley said that the newly equipped vessel will increase the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office capabilities for searching Lake Mahopac at night and in foul weather.

The vessel was provided to the county Sheriff’s Department by the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, at no cost to Putnam County, according to Langley's office.

The Sheriff’s Office participates in a state Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation reimbursement program, which provides funding for all of the Sheriff’s Department’s Marine Patrol operations.
