DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation from the Poughkeepsie barracks have arrested Village of Millbrook Mayor Laura M. Hurley on a grand larceny charge after she allegedly misappropriated funds from the Town of Washington, state police said.

The arrest came about nearly nine months after an official from the Town of Washington alleged that Hurley had stolen over $1,700 in town funds to pay a family member’s college loans, according to state police.

The alleged misappropriations took place between March 2014 and July 2015, while Hurley was employed as the Town of Washington bookkeeper, state police said.

In addition to her duties as bookkeeper, Hurley has served as Millbrook's mayor since April 2010, according to a report published in the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Following an investigation, the Town of Pleasant Valley Justice Court signed the warrant ordering Hurley’s arrest on Thursday, according to state police.

Hurley has been charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, a class E felony, and official misconduct, a class A misdemeanor, state police said.

The defendant was arraigned in the Town of Pleasant Valley Court and released on her own recognizance, according to state police.

She is scheduled to reappear in the Town of Pleasant Valley Court on Thursday, October 20, state police said.
