Man, 18, Driving 130 MPH Near School Apprehended After Putnam Police Chase

SOUTHEAST, N. Y. -- An 18-year-old Southeast man is facing several reckless driving charges, among other things, after a series of incidents in which Putnam County Sheriff's police said they saw him driving at more than twice the speed limit, spinning his car on the roadway, and fleeing police.

Thomas P. Maloney, 18, of Ivy Hill Road, is being held at the Putnam County Correctional Facility after being charged with four counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving and several traffic violations. Putnam County Sheriff's police arrested him Feb. 15 after stopping the car for speeding, police said.

Many of the charges, though, stem from a Jan. 21 incident in which police estimated his speed to be in excess of 130 mph at one point as police tried to pull over his white BMW, police said. Putman County Sheriff's police spotted the car on Route 22 in Southeast, and saw it spin in the road, police said.

As police approached, the driver sped off. Police said the car went as fast as 130 mph near the Green Chimneys School.

Then, on Jan. 30, New York State troopers contacted Putnam County about an arrest of a driver in a white BMW performing "doughnuts" on Route 22 at Doansburg Road. Maloney was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, police said.

Troopers told Putnam County Sheriff's police that Maloney told them he'd eluded Putnam County officers in the earlier incident. Putnam County police applied for an arrest warrant for Maloney.

Then while police were on patrol along Route 22 in Southeast on Feb. 15, they spotted the white BMW, police said. Police estimated the car's speed at 90 mph in a 35 mph zone, and then the driver increased speed to 120 mph in a 55 mph zone, police said.

When police stopped the car, there were also four teenage passengers inside, police said. If found guilty of the misdemeanor charges, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 for each charge, police said.
