Fourth Suspect Arraigned in North Salem Woods Body Case

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – A fourth suspect has been arraigned in the killing of a New Jersey man whose body was found in the North Salem woods by a couple of horseback riders last June.

District Attorney Janet DiFiore said Patrick Smith, 25, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count each of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree robbery, unlawful imprisonment, fourth-degree grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. Each of the first six counts is a felony; the seventh is a misdemeanor. If convicted, he could face a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Smith is accused of acting with three accomplices, Jessica Ryan French, 24, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., Charles Blanchard, 22, of Hill, N.H. and Travis Morin, 25, of Danbury, N.H., all of whom have been arraigned on similar charges.

The victim, Epifanio Medina, 65, was last seen alive in Passaic at about 4 p.m. June 2, 2011 and was reported missing by family members June 5. Authorities allege Medina was abducted, robbed and killed and the body later dumped in North Salem’s Graymark Nature Preserve. Jewelry belonging to the victim was found in the possession of the accused, police said.

Smith is scheduled to appear in court July 25. He is in custody at the Westchester County Jail.
