North Salem Urges Residents to Take Energy Survey

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Over the next few days, most North Salem residents will be receiving an emailed comprehensive energy use inventory survey that Council member Amy Rosmarin stressed is well worth the five minutes it takes to complete.

"We want everyone to participate," Rosmarin said. "We want the information to be useful and the higher the participation the more accurate the information is and the more appropriate the recommendations. A lot of the recommendations will result in cost savings."

The survey is part of an effort by a multi-town Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium (NWEAC) to develop a climate action plan, which is being funded through a $280,000 state grant.

"This plan will include recommendations for how the municipal government and the broader community can reduce fossil fuel consumption to lessen environmental impacts in a cost effective manner," Rosmarin explained. "This inventory and climate action plan is a critical first step in enabling us to actively, extensively and responsibly reduce our emissions. It will identify energy saving opportunities and establish attainable goals to reduce our carbon footprint."

The deadline for the survey to be completed is Jan. 25. The results will be analyzed by the consultant that designed the survey. The survey can be found here.

Meanwhile, North Salem will be holding a Sustainability Summit in February to explore and set its vision, which Rosmarin said is an opportunity for the community to work together to develop the town's sustainability initiatives.

"There's so much opportunity," said Rosmarin, who was instrumental in founding the NWEAC two years ago. "We're trying to identify what projects people in town are interested in."

A larger summit with all 14 NWEAC towns and municipalities in southern Westchester will be held March 3.

Anyone interested in attending North Salem's summit or obtaining further information can contact Rosmarin at or 914-669-4322.
