NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Ninety-eight percent of North Salem households were without power Tuesday afternoon, according to NYSEG.
“The reasonable expectation is that most sections of town will be out of power until Sunday or Monday,” said North Salem Deputy Supervisor Peter Kamenstein. “We’ll be lucky if we get it before. All of Westchester is devastated. The North Salem Highway Department has been amazing. They’ve opened up all the roads and major arteries."
The emergency shelter at the North Salem Ambulance Corps at 14 Daniel Road opened on Monday and will remain open indefinitely, said Kamenstein – as long as there’s demand.
The shelter offers showers, electricity and wifi. Supplies of dry ice and potable water will be distributed twice a day at a approximlately 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the ambulance corps building.
