Fallen Tree Causes Power Outage in North Salem

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Police were called to Hawley Road about noon Monday when a large tree fell across the road, breaking an electric power line.

Officer Michael Castellano summoned the Croton Falls Fire Department, whose members monitored the scene until New York State Electric and Gas could address the problem.

About 1 p.m. an NYSEG repair crew arrived. They shut off the power until the tree could be removed and the wire repaired, and ultimately restored power to the area. Fifty-five NYSEG customers were affected.

Cash Stolen: When an employee at the Salem Hills Nursing Home went to the parking lot on May 22 to get lunch money from her car, she discovered that the passenger-side window was partly down and her wallet, which had been left on the floor of the car, was on the passenger seat. Sgt. Andrew Brown investigated and found no damage nor malfunctioning of the window. The victim examined her wallet and reported that $300 was missing, in addition to personal information about herself and her children. Brown could find no witnesses to the incident, nor were there any surveillance cameras in the area. The victim was advised to monitor her own and her children’s credit reports for any suspicious activity.

Mailbox Vandalism: A Yerkes Road resident complained to police over the weekend that, for the eighth time, his mailbox had been knocked down. The box’s supporting post was broken as well. Officer Michael Castellano canvassed the area and discovered that most of the neighboring mailboxes were also damaged or dented but were all standing.
