Breaking News: Storm Knocks Out Power To Thousands In Westchester

Ambulance Corps Building Opens as Shelter

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -Nearly all of the town was without power Sunday afternoon following Saturday's pre-Halloween snow storm and the Ambulance Corps building has been opened as a shelter for those seeking heat.

Superintendent Warren Lucas learned from NYSEG before noon on Sunday that 87 percent of the town was without power. NYSEG warned that it may be several days before power is restored.

Lucas said that it was going to get cold Sunday evening and dip to 20 degrees by Monday morning. The ground is still warm, so pipes will not freeze, he said. Lucas said he is concerned, however, about older residents. Many may not receive any information because their phones and/or email are not working, he said, and asked people to check on their neighbors.

The low temperature is expected to be 18 degrees and Monday's forecast calls for a high of 47 degrees and a low of 33.

The Ambulance Corps building at 19 Daniel Road is open as a shelter and dry ice was expected to arrive there late Sunday. Residents are reminded to bring food and the building has electricity and a generator.

Call the North Salem Office of Emergency Management, 669-5464 with questions.

"Your children may not want us to do this but we have told NYSEG that our priority is getting the school buildings on," said Lucas Sunday. "We'll know later today whether the buildings will have electricity."
