NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - It has been said that North Salem has more horses than households. Perhaps it is not quite true, but surely there are as many horse-lovers and nearly as many horse-riders as there are households.
If you fall among the majority, you may be interested in one of the following possibilities:
Stalls
Overhill Farm on Wallace Road has two large stalls available. Price includes 24-hour care, top quality hay, grain and bedding, daily worming and all-day turnout in grassy paddocks. There is no riding ring but convenient hacking to nearby trainers and trails. Mares or geldings are welcome. The fee is $875 per month. Call 914-669-5814.
Another barn offers 12 x 12 stalls with windows and grassy all-day turnout. A quiet, covered riding ring, a large field and access to miles of North Salem Bridle Trails. The owner lives on the property and does daily night check, with hay and carrot snacks. Lessons available and trainers also welcome. Call 914-485-1204.
Grooms needed
At a barn on Vail Lane, a part-time groom is needed for Saturdays and/or Sundays, 8 a.m. to 4 or 5 p.m. Applicants must be experienced in mucking and grooming. The pay is $13 per hour. Call 917-921-0884.
In Ridgefield, CT, a private dressage barn needs an experienced part-time groom, capable of all aspects of horse care. Applicants must have Work Eligibility papers. Some riding is possible.
Horse For Lease
A 9-year-old 15.1 Welsh cross gelding hopes there is a small adult or child who wants to lease him two days a week. He is quiet, safe and sweet. He does cross rails and fences up to 3 feet. He can go out on the trails and be taken to shows but must be stabled at his home farm on Baxter Road. There are acres and acres of nearby riding trails and fields and indoor and outdoor rings. All this, plus a friendly atmosphere. Call 914-276-7409.
Clipping
Janet Offenhauser will clip, trim and pull your horses mane, though she draws the line at braiding. Call her at 914-669-0165 or 914-393-1063.
Trailering
Need the perfect car to tow your horse trailer? Here is someone who bought a 2003 Toyota 4 Runner SR5 V8, with less than 50 towing miles on it. Alas, plans changed and the car is now for sale. The owner describes it as in absolutely great condition cosmetically and mechanically. It is a dream to drive with a horse trailer. Call 914-906-6964.
Farrier
Eamonn A. Gillespie, Blacksmith, is taking on customers. Call 845-222-1075.
