NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Joan VanScoy, a 92-year-old North Salem r esident doesn't show signs of slowing down.

She is active with the North Salem Seniors, having served as first vice-president, and North Salem Historical Society, for which she served as a trustee and remains secretary. She was also supervisor of the Hudson Valley Teachers Credit Union.

VanScoy emigrated from England to North Salem in 1951. Originally from Richmond Hill, her family survived the German blitzkrieg in World War II. Their home was hit by a bomb and collapsed, but they all survived.

She met her husband, Benjamin, a North Salem native, who was stationed in England during World War II. They married in 1944, moving back to North Salem in 1951.

Benjamin died in 1961. VanScoy eventually became a US citizen and worked for the North Salem School District for 31 years, doing public relations and bookkeeping.

Still living in the same house, VanScoy said she feels blessed to have settled in North Salem.

"If I had to go to another country this was it," VanScoy said. "People are so nice and so friendly. Life has been very good here."
