WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Who says a house's ceilings have to be boring? While most homeowners opt for the traditional white finish, adding a splash of color to a ceiling can bring a unique touch to any room.

"Decorators use the ceiling as a fifth wall to create dramatic, sophisticated and fun environments that are unique and different form ordinary white ceilings," said Kim Scappaticci, design director at Wallauer's Design Center. "The ceiling is usually the largest expanse of uninterrupted space in a room, so its color greatly impacts the room's ambience."

When selecting a color, it's important to consider the room's desired feel. Dark ceilings bring coziness to a room with high ceilings, while lighter colors create an open and airy atmosphere. For example, a dark ceiling in a high room or stairwell brings proportion to the space, while using silver in a smaller area such as a bathroom invokes expansiveness and luxury.

Stumped on what colors work best? Scappaticci shares her thoughts on the best hues for any ceiling. " Wythe Blue creates the light, airy feeling of the sky and seems to lift the entire room," said Scappaticci. "It's subtle and sophisticated, and complements dark wall color while softening a room's overall formality."

To provide a pop of contrast and a visual break, she suggest choosing a complimentary color such as Farm Fresh . The hue's subtle orange tone adds a fun glow to any room.

"Color can also be used to create a new architectural feature," said Scappaticci. For example, homeowners can create a faux cove ceiling by framing Midsummer Night , a rich cocoa color, with a Creamy Frappe border, producing a recessed look. The color combination gives a flat surface the appearance of being a textured ceiling.
