Katonah has been cited as a walkable place with a sense of history in a brand-new New York Times profile.

As the biggest of three hamlets in the town of Bedford, Katonah has a population of about 7,000 residents and covers an estimated 12 square miles.

The Times also notes that the demographics of the area have shifted over the past three decades from primarily working class to more affluent. However, it has maintained its small-town atmosphere and is known for its residents’ sense of community pride.

The commercial strip of Katonah is less than a mile long and runs parallel to the Metro-North Railroad tracks. Local businesses include everything from one-of-a-kind boutiques to fresh eateries and more, many of which are nestled in turn-of-the-century Victorians.

Other notable places in the neighborhood include the John Jay Homestead, the Katonah Village Library and the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, which sits on a former private estate within a flourishing garden.

As mentioned, Katonah is ideal for those who prefer walkable neighborhoods. Various errands can be completed without the need for a vehicle.

Athletic enthusiasts are also bound to enjoy the recreational options offered at Katonah Memorial Park, which include ball fields, tennis courts, swimming pools and walking trails.

Homes in Katonah range from about $600,000 to over a million, with real estate prices rising with closer proximity to Katonah Avenue. But industry experts say that competition is starting to lower prices.

Ultimately, Katonah is a hamlet with a rich history and a deep sense of community.
