Crash On Main Street: Duo Charged With Stealing SUV From Driveway In Ridgefield

Two teens were charged with larceny after allegedly stealing an SUV out of a Fairfield County driveway.

The incident took place in Ridgefield around 10:40 p.m., on Monday, May 22 on Nutmeg Ridge located off Branchville Road (Route 102).

Capt. Jeff Raines of the Ridgefield Police said the department received a call reporting that several individuals were attempting to steal their car.

Officers responded to the area and spotted the Atlas take off at a high rate of speed, Raines said.

Shortly after, officers located a crash involving the Volkswagen at the intersection of Main Street and Big Shop Lane. All of the occupants of the Volkswagen fled the scene, he added.

Officers were able to locate two of them behind a house on Abbott Avenue and took them into custody.

Hartford County resident Ayana Poventud, age 19, of New Britain, and Alejandro Santiago, age 18, also of New Britain, were arrested and charged with larceny.

Poventud was also charged with possession of marijuana, failure to display lights, and passing in a no-passing zone.

Santiago was released on a $5,000 bond. Poventud, who could not make bail, was held to appear in court.
