NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Simone Gell , owner of The Mane Barre Studio on 2 Keeler Lane in North Salem, may have started her business with equestrians in mind, but her classes help athletes in all sports. The method she teaches aids in strengthening, flexibility, posture, and alignment, which anyone can benefit from.

An avid rider, Gell opened her business in September 2015 after studying the barre method for 10 years. When she saw her equestrian abilities increase exponentially as a result of her studio work, she realized she had the seeds for a business.

"The method of barre focuses on small movements, nuances of tiny muscles, and there’s a tremendous focus on alignment," she said. "Becoming a more proficient rider is all about nuances."

In addition to teaching classes at her studio, Gell, a Chappaqua resident, also does alignment rides, usually for people who have taken her classes first. After instructing them in the studio, Gell goes to their barn and instructs them in the saddle. "I understand their strengths and weaknesses, where they’re not even, issues they have with their feet on the ground," she said. "The issues in the studio are the same issues they have in the saddle."

She points out that this form of exercise is designed to build muscle without taxing joints. "The class is not just for riders; It’s for anyone who wants get stronger, leaner, or gain flexibility," she stressed.

Plus, there's great current, motivating music to boot. Said Gell: "It’s a remarkably efficient workout. When you leave, you feel a sense of accomplishment."
