Woman Is Second Suspect Nabbed In String Of Thefts At Long Island Supermarkets

A lengthy investigation into a string of larcenies targeting elderly women led to the arrest of a second suspect who allegedly stole purse and credit cards on Long Island, police said.

On Friday, Aug. 9, the Nassau County Police Department announced that they had arrested Rockaway Beach resident Frank Rodriguez, 57, at his apartment following an investigation into five thefts in the area.

Rodriguez allegedly targeted elderly women when shopping at stores. Police say the victims’ purses and credit cards would be taken while they were distracted looking at store products. Rodriguez would then allegedly leave the store and make as many purchases as possible with the stolen cards before they were canceled.

It is alleged that Rodriguez committed larcenies on:

  •  Thursday, March 14 – Best Market - 40 Great Neck Road, Great Neck Plaza
  • Saturday, May 25 – Shop Rite – 2335 New Hyde Park Road, N. New Hyde Park
  • Wednesday, June 26 – Best Market – 40 Great Neck Road, Great Neck Plaza
  • Saturday, July 6 – Stop n’ Shop – 95 Old Country Road, Carle Place
  • Friday, July 12 – Best Market – 40 Great Neck Road, Great Neck Plaza

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, police investigators announced a second arrest had been made. Rockaway Beach resident Renee Overstreet was taken into custody and charged with identity theft, criminal possession of stolen property, forgery and petit larceny. She was scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead later in the day.

Rodriguez was charged with 25 counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and four counts of first-degree identity theft. He will be arraigned on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the First District Court in Hempstead.
