Long Island Woman, 21, Charged After 85-Year-Old Scammed Out Of Thousands

Police say an 85-year-old victim in Indiana reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson on Wednesday, Nov. 20 around 10:30 a.m.

The caller told the victim that he was arrested for DWI and provided her with a phone number to contact an attorney, according to police.

The victim called the number and was told that her “grandson” needed $8,800 for bail, police say.

The victim allegedly told the scammer that she could only afford to send $2,800, which police say the parties agreed upon.

The funds were sent, prompting the scammer to contact the victim once again to request more money, police say.

The woman then recognized that she was the victim of a scam and contacted her local police department, Noblesville Police Department, who then contacted Freeport Police.

Detectives with the Nassau County Police Department subsequently coordinated the delivery of the suspect package to the intended party at an address on Westend Avenue in Freeport, where further investigation led to the arrest of Liany Torres, 21, of the same address.

Torres was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and fourth-degree attempted larceny. She is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday, Nov. 21.
