Paul Rothstein and Blythe Mendelsohn-Rothstein were watching the popular show "Absinthe," outside Caesars Palace, when they found out about the country's worst mass shooting by a text from a cousin, said lohud.com.
Little did the Rockland couple know that by the next morning 59 people would be dead and another 500 wounded at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino by a lone gunman, 64-year-old, Stephen Paddock.
Rothstein described a night of walking more almost two miles to their hotel with police armed with rifles on every corner and said that everyone seemed to be in "a state of shock," and all they could think of were "those poor people," reported lohud.com.
He added that once they reached their hotel room, staff checked their IDs and room keys before allowing them inside, added lohud.com.
Las Vegas police and the FBI are still tracking Paddock's steps to come up with a motive for the shooting.
Paddack, who lived in a retirement community outside of Vegas, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the hotel, on concertgoers at a country music festival.
