ORANGEBURG, N.Y. -- It’s a simple question: “What’s the most DVlicious Italian restaurant in the county?”
What's the Best Italian Restaurant In Rockland?
Del' Arte Restaurant, Orangeburg
Posa Posa, Nanuet
Sounds straightforward, right? But with a dizzying array of options – everything from old-school red sauce joints to modern takes on Grandma’s homemade cooking to trattorias with gourmet pizzas -- the answer can be hard to answer.
We asked for your favorites; three have been narrowed down as part of our contest and those finalists are being profiled this week.
Voting continues until 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28. You can vote multiple times, albeit once per day.
Grab a fork, read on, and let your fingers do the clicking.
The winner will receive a framed DVlicious certificate as well as the pride in knowing it offers a taste of Italy close to home.
What Makes It Pasta Perfect: Dishes like orecchiette with crumbled sausage, broccoli rabe, garlic and olive oil or zuppa di pesce, a heaping helping of seafood (lobster, mussels, shrimp, calamari) over fresh pasta, spinach or broccoli rabe.
Worth Special Mention: Owners John and Rosemarie Carollo, who have operated Del’ Arte since 1995, pride themselves on being members of the community and are involved in many charitable events, including an Italian festival that raised money for Camp Venture, an integrated summer program for young people with disabilities.
They even named one of their pasta dishes after a local, John Allen Murphy, an advocate for the developmentally disabled, who recently retired after 44 years representing Orangetown on the Rockland County Legislature. “He loves his pasta,” said Rosemarie. His dish is spaghetti alla chitarra (an egg pasta typical of Abruzzo, Italy), pomodoro sauce, peas, pecorino and ricotta.
In an usual twist on the usual pizza toppings, Del’ Arte once had a tuna sushi pizza on special. Also check out its Romano pie (potato, caramelized onions, pancetta, pecorine and mozzarella). Del’ Arte recently introduced a small bites (osteria) menu, with yummies like grilled octopus, lamb chops and homemade stuffed rolls.
