Two Nabbed Following Long Island Chase In Stolen Vehicle

Two men were nabbed hiding in a shed on Long Island after taking police on a chase in an alleged stolen vehicle that ended in a crash.

The incident took place around 1:45 p.m., Monday, May 20 in West Hempstead, according to the Nassau County Police.

According to detectives, while investigating a case from involving a stolen 2019 gray colored Honda CRV police spotted the vehicle at the intersection of Laurel Avenue and Linden Avenue in Hempstead.

The vehicle was being driven by a male black identified as Rashawn Cummings, 21, of Hempstead, and a passenger identified as Laron Watts, 20, Rockville Centre.

The detectives followed the vehicle it sped through multiple streets, struck a vehicle at the intersection of Woodfield Road and Chestnut Street in West Hempstead, and struck a large curb resulting in the vehicle being severely damaged. 

The two suspects fled on foot northbound on Chestnut Street. With the assistance of the K-9 Unit, the two were found hiding in a rear shed on Lewis Street in West Hempstead. 

After a short time, the two men were placed into custody.

Both were charged with:

  • Unauthorized use of a vehicle
  • Criminal possession of stolen property
  • Criminal possession of stolen property, fourth-degree

Watts was also charged with false personation after giving police a fake name.

The men were scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, May 21.
