Bon Secours Community Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), celebrated the 25th anniversary of its mental health unit and recognized the work of its behavioral health staff in commemoration of Mental Health Month in May.

The hospital provides behavioral health services for Port Jervis and the entire tristate area, including all of Orange County, the surrounding counties and adjacent states.

Guest speakers during the celebration included New York State Assemblyman Karl Brabenec, 98th District; Mary Leahy, MD, CEO, Bon Secours Charity Health System; Sophie Crawford Rosso, Vice President, Hospital Administrator of Bon Secours Community Hospital; Tera Colavito, LCSW, Administrator of Behavioral Health, Bon Secours Charity Health System; and Brenda Hughes, RN, BSN, LCSW, Nurse Manager, Behavioral Health at Bon Secours Community Hospital.

“We are so proud of the Mental Health Unit at Bon Secours Community Hospital that has been providing treatment for decades to one of the most vulnerable populations in our society, persons with mental health illnesses,” said Mary Leahy, MD, CEO, Bon Secours Charity Health System. “We are fortunate to have such a highly-skilled and caring team that can treat our patients clinically and have a truly meaningful impact on their lives. Most importantly, they have the ability to provide hope for these patients and their families.”

During the event, Assemblyman Brabenec presented Tera Colavito, Administrator of Behavioral Health, with a Certificate of Recognition from the New York State Assembly for the 25th anniversary of the Mental Health Unit at Bon Secours Community Hospital.

Behavioral Health Nurse Manager Brenda Hughes was also recognized for 25 years of outstanding care.

Team members, who have served in the Mental Health Unit since the beginning, 25 years ago, were also honored. These team members include: Bhupinder Gill, MD, Medical Director, Behavioral Health; Philippa McAfee, LCSW-R, Psychiatric Social Worker; and Michael Peters, RN, Psychiatric Nurse.

The unit, which has grown to include 50 employees, cares for approximately 800 patients per year who suffer from a range of mental health issues including bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder and depression.
