NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Donny Powell has gone from the basketball courts of New Rochelle to the hard court of the University of New Haven since graduating last June.
Powell, who was a member of the Section 1 champion New Rochelle High School basketball team that upset rival Mount Vernon and reached the Class AA state final being beaten last March, has made the Chargers 2013-14 varsity squad.
"Things went good after the first tryout and the coach told me he had interest in me so I had high hopes," Powell said of his journey to make the roster. "
New Haven has received five votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Preseason Poll. The Chargers posted a 20-9 record and advanced to the NCAA East Region Championship Semifinals last season.
New Haven opens its season on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Holy Family in Philadelphia and hosts Bronxville's Concordia College on Saturday, Nov. 16. Local fans will have a chance to see Powell play when New Haven visits Pace University and new coach Pat Kennedy in Pleasantville on Saturday, Nov. 23.
