New Rochelle Crowned State Class AA Football Champion

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Quarterback Khalil Edney ran and passed the New Rochelle offense to a stunning four-touchdown lead at halftime and the Huguenots rolled to their second New York State Class AA football title Saturday with a 34-6 victory over Orchard Park of Buffalo at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

New Rochelle finished the season with an impressive 11-1 record and won its second title since 2003. Orchard Park, the defending Class AA state champ, finished its season at 11-2. It was also the second state title for New Rochelle coach Lou DiRienzo.

Edney tossed two touchdown passes to Joe Clarke and ran 46 yards for a touchdown in dominating the first half. Edney also scored on a four-yard run in the third quarter to make the score 34-0.

Ahmad Encarnacion and Keimon Barrow each caught Edney passes to help move the New Rochelle offense. Jason Ceneus, Jonathan Forrest and Edney led the rushing attack. Forrest had a touchdown run in the first half.

Shane Forbes, Gavin Harley, Justin Douglas, Ray Ganley, Cory Holder and Terrance Holden led the Huguenots defense that stuffed an Orchard Park offense had averaged nearly 40 points per game in its previous 12 games.

Four busloads of New Rochelle fans took the trip to Syracuse to support the state champions.

Baltimore Ravens star running back Ray Rice, a member of the 2003 championship team, Tweeted congratulations to the "young Huguenots" as the game ended.
